How to Get to St Ives (and Where to Park)
By Car
If you’re planning a day trip to St Ives Cornwall, be aware that parking in the town centre is very limited, and the narrow, winding streets can get very congested, especially during the summer months. Your best bet is to park at Trenwith Car Park at the top of the hill.
- It’s usually easier to find a space here, even on busier days.
- From the car park, it’s about a 10-minute walk downhill into the heart of town.
- The walk back up is a bit of a hill, but manageable and totally worth it for the reduced stress!
Car Park Location: TR26 1DD
Tip: Arrive early if visiting in high season, pay and display.
By Train (Highly Recommended)
One of the most scenic and stress-free ways to reach St Ives is by taking the branch line train from St Erth. The journey takes around 10–15 minutes, winding along the coast with stunning views over Carbis Bay and the ocean.
- You can park at St Erth station and hop on the train.
- It drops you right in the centre of town, a short walk from the harbour and beaches.
Bonus: This route is often called one of the most beautiful train rides in the UK!
By Bus
First Bus runs regular services to St Ives from nearby towns like Penzance, Hayle, and Camborne. This can be a good option if you’re staying locally and want to avoid the hassle of parking altogether.
St Ives Day Trip Itinerary
Morning: Coffee at Mount Zion Café
A great way to start a day trip to St Ives Cornwall is with a coffee at Mount Zion, a small, tucked-away café overlooking the harbour. It’s one of those hidden gems that’s easy to miss if you’re not actively searching for it. However, it’s well worth seeking out – especially for coffee lovers who appreciate a stunning view.
The café itself is tiny and minimal, with a laid-back atmosphere and just a handful of seats both inside and out. Those lucky enough to claim one of the window seats can sip their coffee while taking in the harbour views. While the prices are on the higher side, the quality is exceptional, making it a must-vist stop among the many things to do in St Ives.

Best Things To Do in St Ives
Mid-Morning: St Ives Boat Tour & Seal Spotting
One of the most popular things to do in St Ives is to take a boat tour in search of seals. Many trips advertise a visit to the famous “Seal Island,” but sightings aren’t guaranteed. On this occasion, the seals were absent from their usual spot, so the tour headed instead to the striking Godrevy Lighthouse, perched on a rugged island and home to a thriving seal population.
The trip we booked was with a local company called Tiger Lily. At £25 per person, the tour not only offered the chance to see seals up close but also provided breathtaking views of the Cornish coastline and insights into the area’s maritime history and wildlife.
For anyone on a day trip to St Ives Cornwall, a seal-spotting boat tour is a must for both the scenery and the wildlife encounters.

Where To Eat in St Ives
Midday: Lunch at Yallah Café
After a morning on the water, a stop at Yallah St Ives Café is the perfect way to refuel during a day in St Ives. This café is one of the town’s most popular spots for a relaxed lunch. Those lucky enough to secure a window seat can enjoy panoramic views over the harbour.
The menu is small, focusing on fresh, flavourful ingredients. During our visit we indulged in the vanilla and chia overnight oats, yellow split pea hummus served with crusty sourdough, and a refreshing honey-infused cold espresso! Yum! Definitely one of the best places to eat in St Ives if you want your lunch with a view.

Best Beaches in St Ives & Coastal Walks
Afternoon: Beach Hopping
St Ives offers several stunning beaches to explore, making it a highlight among things to do in St Ives. Starting at Harbour Beach, located right in the heart of town, visitors can enjoy a quick swim or simply watch the boats drift in and out of the harbour.
A short walk away lies Porthmeor Beach, a favourite among surfers for its consistent waves and lively atmosphere. For those seeking a quieter, more sheltered spot, Porthminster Beach provides calm waters and a charming café nearby – perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun!
The scenic coastal path linking these beaches offers an ideal walking route, especially on a sunny day, with breathtaking views throughout.
For visitors with dogs, Bamaluz Beach is the town’s dedicated dog-friendly spot, where pups can roam off-leash.

Afternoon: Walk to The Island
After exploring the beaches, a short walk leads visitors to The Island, a small rocky peninsula just minutes from St Ives harbour. At its summit sits the historic St Nicholas Chapel, a tranquil spot surrounded by stunning natural beauty.
The true highlight of this walk is the breathtaking panoramic views of St Ives and the surrounding coastline. From this vantage point, visitors can take in sweeping sights of the harbour, beaches, and rolling waves stretching out into the distance.
The path to the top is gentle yet provides enough elevation to feel like a mini adventure. It’s widely regarded as one of the most rewarding things to do in St Ives, offering some of the best views in the area.

Afternoon Snack: St Ives Bakery
No day trip to St Ives Cornwall would be complete without stopping by St Ives Bakery for a classic Cornish pasty. The bakery window is a tempting display of freshly baked goods that’s hard to resist!
(I sampled the veggie pasty and it was delicious.)
Friendly warning – watch out for the seagulls, they WILL try and steal your pasty when you’re not looking!

Late Afternoon: Carbis Bay
To round off the day, take a short 10-minute drive from St Ives to nearby Carbis Bay, an essential addition to any St Ives day trip. Known for its stunning turquoise waters and wide, golden sands, Carbis Bay is often regarded as one of Cornwall’s most beautiful beaches.
Parking can be challenging, especially during peak times when spaces fill quickly. The best option is to park at the Carbis Bay train station car park and enjoy the downhill walk to the beach.
Once at the beach, visitors can choose to relax on the sand or enjoy a meal at the beachside restaurant or one of the nearby hotels, both offering fantastic views. Taking a dip in the turquoise waters is a refreshing way too (and that’s exactly what we chose to do!)
