Where is Rotorua?

Rotorua is located in the central parts of New Zealand’s North Island. It lies 230 kilometres (140 miles) southeast of Auckland.

Auckland airport is the largest international airport within New Zealand, though Rotorua does have its own domestic airport. It takes approximately 2.5-3 hours to reach Rotorua via car from Auckland, or 6-6.5 hours from the capital city of Wellington.

When is the best time to visit Rotorua?

The best time to visit Rotorua depends on what you’d like to experience, but generally, the warmer months are recommended. Spring and autumn are ideal for those who want to visit outside of the school holidays.

Summer, which runs from December to February, brings hot weather and increased accommodation prices. Winter is the least popular time to visit but on the plus side, there’s fewer crowds and more affordable accommodation.

2. Skyline Rotorua

The Skyline Gondola in Rotorua is a must-visit attraction, offering stunning panoramic views of the city, Lake Rotorua, and the surrounding landscape. The 900-meter ride up Mount Ngongotaha provides breathtaking scenery, and at the top, you can enjoy a range of activities, including the thrilling Skyline luge – a downhill ride on a small cart suitable for all ages. 

There is also a restaurant at the summit as well as the Sky Swing, an insane ride that swings you high over the Rotorua landscape. Additionally, you can also find multiple mountain bike trails as well as zip line courses.

3. Hell’s Gate

Located 15 minutes south of Rotorua is Hell’s Gate, a unique geothermal park and spa. A visit to Hell’s Gate is an immersive experience and one of our personal favourite days out that we experienced in Rotorua.

Visitors can walk along the trails and view the dramatic geothermal landscape, while learning about the Māori connection with the land. There is also the opportunity to soak in the mud pools, which we’d highly recommend! Also, there’s a therapeutic spa experience, where you can relax in the mineral pools or enjoy a traditional Māori mud bath.

We would recommend booking The Hell’s Gate Experience which encompasses all of the main activities.

4. Redwoods Treewalk

Did you know there are Redwoods in Rotorua!? A visit to Redwoods Treewalk is a must do and such a fun activity for the entire family. The walk itself is above the forest floor, along eco-suspended bridges and platforms. The walk is considered one of the best tree top walks in New Zealand and takes on average 30-40 minutes to complete.

The tree top walk has both daytime and evening opening hours. During the evening, the walk turns into a magical wonderland as the paths and trees are illuminated by hundreds of lights.

5. Redwoods Altitude

If you’d like a little more adventure with your Redwoods visit then why not combine it with a zipline course! The team at Altitude take you 25m high above the forest floor, on a 650m long course complete with bridges, spirals and flying foxes.

This fully guided experience was one of our highlights in Rotorua and we can’t recommend it enough!

6. Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa

If you’re wanting to visit the newest spa in Rotorua, this is it. The breathtaking Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa is an absolute must-visit and worth the splurge. Built on the shores of Lake Rotorua, Wai Ariki is built on the legacy of Māori culture and Ngāti Whakaue healing practices. Within the spa you can enjoy saunas, cold plunges, steam rooms and mineral pools.

There are various packages and experiences on offer, though we’d highly recommend Restorative Journey, a 2 hour cultural wellness experience.

7. White Water Rafting

If you’re an adrenaline junkie then this could be for you! White water rafting on the Kaituna River in Rotorua is an exhilarating adventure that offers some of the best rapids in New Zealand. Known for its exciting Grade 5 rapids, the Kaituna River features the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall, the Tutea Falls, which plunges 7 meters (23 feet).

8. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Named one of the “20 Most Surreal Places in the World,” this geothermal attraction is a must-visit. It’s highly recommended to go in the morning to witness the eruption of Lady Knox Geyser, which happens at 10:15 a.m. The geyser can reach impressive heights of up to 20 meters! Tickets include all day access and visitors can choose between one or all three walks which take between 45 and 90 minutes.

9. Ōkere Falls Track

If you choose to go white-water rafting, you’ll likely experience Ōkere Falls from the river! However, if you’d prefer to stay dry while still enjoying the falls, this walking track is perfect for you. At a distance of 1.2 km return, it’s a relatively easy walk to a viewing platform overlooking the thunderous Tutea Falls. Many visitors time their visit to watch the white-water rafting tours rush down the falls!

10. Hobbiton

I couldn’t create this list without including the world-famous Hobbiton Movie Set Tour. Located just an hour’s drive from Rotorua, it’s definitely worth adding to your itinerary. It’s an incredible experience, and with tours departing from Rotorua, there’s no reason to miss out.
